Glossary of sports betting and casino terms

Short, neutral definitions of terms you meet on sportsbook and casino sites. They describe how the terms are generally used, not Azimutbet's specific rules.

Sports betting

  • Accumulator (parlay) – one bet combining several selections; all must win. The odds are multiplied.
  • Cash out – an offer from the bookmaker to settle a bet early for a set amount.
  • Decimal odds – the total return per 1 staked, including the stake. Odds of 2.50 return 2.50 for 1.
  • Implied probability – 1 ÷ decimal odds. Odds of 2.00 imply 50%.
  • Margin (overround) – the amount by which the implied probabilities of all outcomes exceed 100%; the bookmaker's built-in edge.
  • Handicap – a goal or point advantage given to one side to balance a match.
  • Live (in-play) betting – betting on an event that has already started; odds change during play.
  • Over/Under – a bet on whether a total (goals, points) is above or below a set line.
  • System bet – a set of accumulators built from the same selections, so not every selection has to win.
  • Void – a bet cancelled and refunded, for example when a match is abandoned.

Casino games

  • House edge – the casino's average advantage, as a percentage of each bet. European roulette: 2.70%.
  • RTP (return to player) – the theoretical long-run share of stakes a game pays back; 100% minus the house edge.
  • Volatility (variance) – how much results swing: high volatility means rarer, larger wins.
  • RNG – random number generator, the software that decides outcomes in digital games.
  • Live casino – games streamed from a studio with a real dealer.
  • Crash game – a game in which a multiplier rises until it "crashes"; you must cash out before that.
  • Progressive jackpot – a prize that grows with each bet across linked games until it is won.
  • Scatter / Wild – slot symbols: scatters usually trigger features anywhere on the reels; wilds substitute for other symbols.
  • Basic strategy – the mathematically best decision for each blackjack hand given the dealer's up-card.

Bonuses

  • Wagering requirement – how many times a bonus (or bonus plus deposit) must be bet before winnings can be withdrawn.
  • Minimum odds – the lowest odds a bet needs to count towards wagering.

  • Maximum cash-out – a cap on what can be withdrawn from bonus winnings.
